“There is no extraordinary reason why I paint, I simply must. I love all aspects of the creative process, the materials, the act of painting and sometimes even the end results. Curiosity drives me and painting has become the ultimate unsolvable puzzle. From mixing the colours to laying down a brushstroke, each step a small mystery to be solved. A unique moment to be shared.
I simply must paint.”
Kala Combrink’s oil paintings capture a fleeting moment in time. Transporting the viewer to a specific place and time, this is the challenge she adores. She loves to paint outdoors as there is an immediacy, freshness and honesty in these paintings that cannot be replicated in the studio.
As a member of SANAVA Kala visited Paris twice for a two-month residency at the Cite Internationale des Arts. She regularly painted outdoors, capturing the light and mood of Paris, The City of Light. She draws inspiration from everyday life, painting mainly seascapes, florals, and street scenes from life.
Kala exhibits regularly with local artists in George, Wilderness and Sedgefield. In 2016 she won first prize in the SCAVA open competition with an abstract seascape followed by a Still life 1st prize in 2017. Her work is in private collections in the USA, Switzerland, Norway, Canada, and South Africa.
